How to create a Facebook Group?
If you want to create a Facebook Groups, go to https://www.facebook.com/groups/ and in the upper-right corner click on the green button ‘Create Group’.
After you click that button, a small pop-up window like this will appear.
Here, just fill in the Group Name and add people you want in the group (don’t worry if you forget on someone, or if you decide to add someone later, you can do it). The last thing is to choose the Privacy of the Group. You have three options – Open, Closed and Secret. The Open-type Group is a Group which everyone can see – they will appear in search results – who exactly are the members of the Group and everyone will be able to see the content that these people posted. In addition, your Facebook Friends will be able to see that you’ve joined such a Group in their News Feed.
The second type of Groups is the Closed Group. Anyone on Facebook can see the group name, its members and people invited to join the group. However, only members of these Groups can see the content of this Group. If you would like to join a Closed Group, there are two options. The first one is that your friend will add you to this Group. The second one is that you can ask to join this Group and the admin of this group will confirm your request. Your friends can see that you've been invited or added to a closed group in their news feed.
The last type of Groups is Secret Group. You will not be able to find them in the search results, and if you are not a member of this Group, you will not be able to see anything about that Group, neither the name, nor its members. In addition, the name of the group will not be showed on the profiles of its members. If you would like to join a secret Group, there is only one option – you have to be added by a member of this Group.
So, to return to our creation of the Group, just choose the Privacy option that suits your intentions the best (you will be able to change the Privacy Settings anytime later), add your Friends that you want in that Group and click the blue button ‘Create’. You will be redirected into another pop-up window, where you can select the Icon of the Group.
So just choose an icon and click ‘Okay’. And that’s it – your very own Group has been created. Easy, right?
Advantages of Facebook Pages versus Groups
Both Pages and Groups have their specific individual features. However, the Facebook Pages have many advantages in comparison with Groups.
Pages have a higher adjustability
Groups operate, more or less, on a chat room principle. They are primarily used for smaller groups of people to discuss things related to the purpose of the Group. You can discuss in real time some issues and continue whenever you want. Pages, on the other hand, are more like a blog or a news website, where you can add content, personalize it, promote it and track your progress of promotion.
Pages are highlighted in the Facebook News Feed
Updates that you will make on your Facebook Page will show on your fans’ News Feed, in spite of Groups’ updates, which will not show up. In addition, Pages are promoted in the right-hand column, if your friends join them. If your friends join some group, no one can ever know.
Pages are anonymous
If you will create a Group, you will always be stated as group’s admin displayed along with your Facebook Profile Picture. It is not possible to remove this feature in the Group’s settings, which is not such a good thing, if you want to remain anonymous. Unlike pages, which are absolutely anonymous, no one will ever know that you are the Admin, unless you would want to make it public and post it to your Page.
Pages are visible to Search Engines
Facebook pages can be visible to non-Facebook users outside of Facebook through search engines just like any other webpage. In addition, you can select your own page URL, respectively the URL after the dash (http://www.facebook.com/thisismyurl). Facebook Groups does not have this feature and cannot be indexed by search engines.
Groups can spam your email
You certainly know the situation when you comment your friends’ status and then you get an email every time someone else comments on it. Well, Facebook Groups do that too. Even though, you can turn off this feature (both the notifications when you comment on your friend’s status and the Facebook Group updates) it can be really irritating, because to receive the email notifications is the default settings and now imagine this on a large-scale Facebook Page.
