Ask any gamers which is better, PlayStation or Xbox, and you are sure to ignite some passionate conversation. PlayStation has certainly been around longer; with the launch of the PlayStation in 1994, it was the first video game console to ship 100 million units after 9 years and 6 months of its initial launch. Also interesting is the inverse relationship between online users and Facebook application users. While the PlayStation 3 may not have sold as many consoles as the Xbox 360, the PlayStation Network has 77 million users and Xbox LIVE has only 35 million users. However when comparing their Facebook applications the Xbox LIVE application has 1,427,845 users while the PlayStation Network application has 928,818 users.
Looking at the numbers alone it would be tempting to say that the PlayStation Network, despite having nearly twice the number of users than Xbox LIVE, is lagging when it comes to Facebook application users due to an “external intrusion” in April on the PlayStation Network where users’ personal data were accessed by hackers and Sony was forced to shut down the PlayStation Network for 23 days. However when looking at the last six months, it seems that the PlayStation Network Facebook application certainly took a hit, but was able to recover.
Not only did they recover, they also gained fans once the PlayStation Network was up and running again. When looking at monthly active users for the Xbox LIVE Facebook application, the numbers tell a different story.
Interest in the Xbox LIVE Facebook application has been waning, as its current lead in the number of monthly active users seems less impressive when compared to its nearly 1.8 million users 6 months ago. With these trends in place it looks like PlayStation will maintain its fan page lead over Xbox and will possibly surpass the Xbox LIVE application within the next 3–6 months.
