If we told you Facebook was 10 years old today, would you believe us? It seems unbelievable, but it’s true - Facebook is 10 today! The company that has so often been referred to as the new kid on the block has developed fast, and this milestone firmly places it into the realms of a mature company by Silicon Valley standards.
10 years ago today, Mark Zuckerberg launched a social network that would change the world. Little did he know that 10 years later, Facebook would be celebrating 1.2 billion monthly active users, revenues of $9.5 billion in 2013, a soaring stock price, and regular new developments.
To commemorate the anniversary, we’ve taken a look at their key milestones over the last 10 years. From the launch of Facebook itself, up to the launch of Graph Search, and the announcement last week of ‘Paper,’ there have been some big developments along the way.
The timeline shows the sheer pace of change at Facebook over the past 10 years, particularly in the last 2 years post-IPO. Some of our favorite developments over the years have been the launch of Pages, Advertisements, and Insights – allowing us to create social media analytics tools that help marketers optimize their strategies and benchmark their performance against competitors.
Facebook has changed a great deal from the early days – it’s easy to forget that features such as timeline, graph search and business pages haven’t always been there for us to use. It’s also very easy to forget the days when a university email address was required to get a Facebook account at all!
For businesses, Facebook has become a platform for reaching and engaging with current, and potential new customers. Facebook advertising has powerful targeting options, pages create a branded environment within the platform, and new rollouts are happening all of the time, with recent developments such as new custom audience targeting options in the ad system being particularly welcome.
For users, Facebook has changed the way we interact with friends, family and our favorite brands. We’re sure Facebook has many more innovations and surprises coming in the near future.
