Changing The World Through Social at Engage Prague 2017

Engage Prague, the world's leading social media conference, is just around the corner. Between May 17 - 19th, you will hear from the brightest experts and visionaries. See how much of an impact social media can make on our lives and get a taste for how this year’s Engage speakers will be talking about using social to influence the world.

In March 2017, Jérôme Jarre, a French Vine and Snapchat star, posted the following video:



Jarre's multi-million social media audience readily responded, and the #TurkishAirlinesHelpSomalia hashtag soon went viral, capturing attention of actors, celebrities, and other influencers.

Jarre went on to partner with several YouTubers and eventually approached Turkish Airlines (the only airline connecting Somalia with Europe), asking them to support the newly-created Love Army for Somalia campaign. The company agreed and Jarre launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for the Somali people.

The result? Turkish Airlines provided a cargo flight capable of transporting 60 tons of food and committed to shipping food containers on their commercial flights until the famine is over. The GoFundMe campaign, in turn, raised over $1 million within the first 19 hours from its launch, and more than $2.5 million until today.

This story proves how powerful social media can be - but it is just one of a wide array of examples from this year alone.

It’s perhaps timely that this year’s Engage social media marketing conference is focusing on “changing the world through social.” Here are a sample of speakers from this year’s event that will be tackling this topic, each in his or her own unique way, from a truly global variety of perspectives:

Mark Nelson is a co-director of Stanford Peace Innovation Lab. He has identified innovative, automated ways to measure peace, both at the neighborhood and global level. He leads the Global Open Social Sensor Array Project, and designs technology interventions to measurably increase positive, mutually beneficial engagement across conflict boundaries.

Laura Hilliger is a writer, educator, strategist and technologist. She dedicates her time and energy to the sociopolitical landscape we call "the web.” She is working to help open up Greenpeace, and is a co-founder of the We Are Open Co-op, and an Ambassador for Opensource.com.

Alice More O'Ferrall is a Digital Engagement Manager for WWF International. She is responsible for ensuring that WWF supporters share, love and engage with digital comms to inspire them to take action for our planet. Alice also enjoys speaking at events and conferences on how we approach social at WWF.

Elianne Ramos is an internationally recognized social entrepreneur and community advocate. She is one of the most influential Latinas in social media, a committee member of Women Leaders of the Americas, as well as an Advisory Board member for the United Nations ModelUN News program. She was also the Latino Digital Coalitions Desk for the Hillary Clinton campaign.

Laura Miller was a Director of Online Engagement in the Office of Digital Strategy at the White House during the Obama administration. Previously, she worked for the Department of Labor, where she led the digital team in the Office of Public Affairs. Before that she worked at Edelman Public Relations and the 2012 Obama for America reelection campaign.
